An Interview with Dr. Wainer:
Why Girls Are Prone to ACL Injuries

 

Dr. Robert Wainer was interviewed on the Good Morning Show, WFMY News 2 of the Piedmont Triad, NC on Friday, July 25, 2008.  News Anchor Rosemary Plybon interviewed Dr. Wainer on Friday morning following a story on Thursday concerning female athletes and the increasing number of ACL injuries.

According to the special report which aired on Thursday, July 24 on WFMY News 2, women are up to eight times more likely than men to tear their ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in comparable sports. The story highlighted the experience of a 16-year-old female high school soccer player who has torn her ACL in both knees. (Click here to read about that special report.)

On Friday, Rosemary Plybon interviewed Dr. Robert Wainer to get clarification on how ACL injuries occur, and why female athletes may be more prone to those types of injuries than males. Dr. Wainer explained which types of sports are more likely to contribute to ACL injuries, and what an ACL injury feels like. He also covered why women are more likely to sustain these types of injuries than men, and what they can do to help protect against these injuries.
