SOS DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Each of our four SOS Divisions  can provide convenient access to a variety of Diagnostic Services that will assist them in providing you with a more definitive diagnosis. The following services are currently available:

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, better know as an MRI, is an advanced, state of the art method, which produces very clear pictures, or images, of the human body without the use of X-rays. This technology enables physicians to detect abnormalities and problems earlier than ever before. MRI uses a powerful, but harmless, magnetic field and radiowaves, like the kind that transmit your favorite FM music. The combination of radiowaves and the magnetic field produce detailed images of body structures such as the spine and bones, and unlike plain x-rays, an MRI will picture soft tissue such as joint ligaments, muscles and their tendons.

The MRI exam is probably one of the easiest and most comfortable exams you may experience. You will be asked to lie down on a cushioned table while the average MR scan takes 5-15 minutes, with a complete exam running 20-60 minutes. During this time, several dozen images may be obtained. You may eat and drink normally prior to and on the day of your exam. The MRI exam poses no risks to the average patient if appropriate safety guidelines are followed. If you have any questions regarding the MR exam, please be sure to discuss them with your doctor.

BONE DENSITOMETRY

Osteoporosis is a serious disease and bone densitometry screening is a quick, non-invasive procedure to determine bone strength. Bone density tests are the most practical way to accurately measure the density of your bones. A bone density test is Not a nuclear bone scan and works by measuring the amount of x-rays that are absorbed by the bones in your body. However, the amount of radiation is only a fraction of that of a chest x-ray and is actually comparable to the amount received densitometry02on a transcontinental airline flight. Precautions will be taken when informed of any chance of pregnancy.

The Bone Densitometry Test is very simple. You will be asked to lie on a cushioned table while it takes only a few minutes to complete. An automatic “arm” will quietly pass over the region of your body being measured. Patients are asked to allow 15-30 minutes for your scheduled appointment. You may eat and drink normally prior to and on the day of your exam. If you have any questions regarding the MR exam, please be sure to discuss them with your doctor.

Osteoporosis Screening is most often used to assess “brittle bones,” especially if you are over 35, if you have a family history or if you are post-menopausal. It should be noted that Osteoporosis is responsible for over 1.3 million fractures, of which 250,000 are hip fractures each year. Bone densitometry is not only for osteoporosis, but also can be used to help diagnose fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. If you suspect any of these conditions, consider scheduling an appointment with us today.
